Externship Description

At Azores Veterinary Practice, we allow a student to extern with us for a maximum of 4 weeks. Externs will be able to ride along with our trained group of veterinarians and be a part of the day-to-day operations. The externs will have the opportunity to practice manual and ultrasound palpation (if student applies for IMV’s Student Loaner Program), assist in vaccinations, surgeries and different reproduction and equine treatments. Please see the pie chart for a breakdown of what type, and the amount of work, we perform at Azores Veterinary Practice. In addition to this, each student will be required to create and present a 15-minute presentation on the last Monday of their externship. The presentation topic will be determined a week before the presentation. We expect nothing but professionalism and dedication from all students that extern with us. We will provide the tools and the environment for an excellent learning experience.

Externship Accommodations

Azores Veterinary Practice will provide you with furnished living accommodations for the duration of your externship. This includes a bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen. The use of the provided accommodation is not mandatory. Externs are free to stay with family, friends, or in nearby hotels at their own discretion, if they have their own form of transportation and are willing to personally cover the costs associated with denying the provided accommodations. If you choose to stay at the provided Azores Veterinary Practice accommodations, a $25 USD/week cleaning fee will need to be paid upon your arrival.

How to Apply

Here at Azores Veterinary Practice, we welcome students from all over the World to come and experience what we have to offer. The steps below outline the Externship Application Process:

*Before beginning, please refer to the Student Calendar at the bottom of the page to identify if the timeframe you would like to request your externship is available.

  1. Please fill out this Externship Application Form and email the form, in addition to one letter of recommendation from a large animal professor, to the three externship supervisors listed here: drlepiz@azoresvet.com, drtadic@azoresvet.com, drfavaro@azoresvet.com.
  2. The externship supervisors will review the application and professor reference once it is submitted.
  1. The applicant will be contacted regardless of if they were approved or denied an externship slot.
  1. Applicants will be asked to attend a mandatory 15-to-20-minute virtual meeting with one of the externship supervisors to get to know the applicant and put a face to the name.
  1. An applicant will only be approved if they meet the minimum large animal requirements, provide the required letter of recommendation from a large animal professor, request a time of year that works with the current externship schedule vacancies, and attends the virtual meeting.
  1. Once officially approved, the applicant will need to attest to reading the General Consent Form by signing the form alongside their large animal professor reference. Once this is done, a supervisor will sign, and the form will be emailed back to the applicant.
  1. Following this, the externship is scheduled. The applicant is responsible for confirming their arrival date to the externship supervisors. A “How to Get to Azores Veterinary Practice” document, containing the different methods of transport available to arrive at the clinic will be sent to the applicant following confirmation of arrival date.
  1. Any other requests, changes, and/or cancellations need to be communicated with the externship supervisors in a timely fashion. We understand that life events occur, we just ask that you communicate if your externship dates will be impacted in any way.
  1. Enjoy your time and get to know the individuals at the practice and explore California as much as you can. We, along with our geographical location, have a lot of wonderful things to offer!

If you have difficulty opening the hyperlinked forms above, please email the externship supervisors and they will provide you with the attached forms.

*Prior to arrival, Azores Veterinary Practice needs to receive a copy of Travel/Health Insurance. If this is not complete, the externship will not be initiated for the time requested.
